Under Jersey’s sweet cries of bliss, Paxton hadn’t heard the raging storm outside, but now he detected the howl of the wind and knew snow was piling up.

When they left by the back door, she stopped in her tracks. “What is this? A blizzard?”

He chuckled. “No, it’s just a squall.”

Fat flakes covered the shoulders of her jacket and her knit hat in no time. He’d like nothing more than to stand here staring at her beauty for hours, but if they didn’t hurry they’d both become abominable snowmen.

“Explain the difference between a blizzard and squall, because I’d love to hear it.” Her cheap boots weren’t good for trekking across the icy parking lot, so he kept a tight grip on her arm.

When he requested a short weekend leave, he knew the incoming weather system might play havoc with him getting back to base. But Penn had told him to take one of the SUVs with heavy snow tires. So at least he had wheels.

She pointed to the SUV. “That’s yours?”

“Not mine. The team’s.”

“Oh. At least we don’t have to walk to my place.”

He liked that she was owning the safehouse as her own. It meant she felt comfortable there and was settling in. That warmed him as much as her drive to get better at the job she’d been thrown into but probably wouldn’t have chosen for herself.

His heart gave a jerk. Seeing her less stressed and carrying less baggage reinforced the decision he’d made to bring her to Alaska. All she needed was a fresh start and some time to find a new path that didn’t involve her family or the Omegas.

If two weeks had done so much for her, what would she be like in a month?

He started the engine.

“I don’t know how you drive in this,” she said.

“This is nothing. The roads are barely covered.” There weren’t many tracks from other vehicles, and those laid down on the streets were already filling up fast.

“Barely covered! How many months does this go on?”

“You mean how long does winter last?” He didn’t want to tell her they’d be getting snow into June in the mountains. He shot her a crooked smile. “A while.”

“I’m going to need a trip to that women’s clothing store in town if I’m staying here through it. I’ll never last with the wardrobe I have.”

The short drive came to an end. He parked behind the safehouse and led Jersey to the door as he’d done before. Only this time, when the woman opened the door to usher them inside, a tiny ball of white and gray fluff burst out at them.

“Oh my gosh!” Jersey made a dash to catch the ball before it collided with her shins. “Gus, you can’t be
